Lit Circles – Historical Fiction

January 23, 2009 · No Comments

Do you enjoy reading historical fiction? 4K is currently working on the second Literature Circle session of this school year with a choice of 5 historical fiction titles to choose from – The Great Wheel, The Cabin Faced West, The Year of Miss Agnes, For This Land, or Run Away Home.

Groups planned their reading for the planned dates, reviewed the Lit Circle format, and discussed ways to make Lit Circle discussions meaningful and enjoyable.

Before, during, or after the day’s assignment, students respond in writing to their reading. They compose a Journal Response in the same format used for school and homework reading logs, then respond to the following Points for Discussion prompt: I’d like to talk to my group about…, I’d like to ask them…, I wonder why…, It was interesting that/when…

Last, students check for the following: I finished my assigned reading. I completed my responses. I dated and labeled my responses. I marked the parts I wanted to share. I put my best effort into my work.
Book groups use written responses to begin Lit Circle discussions – but always add their own unique personal touches to the chat!

In a few weeks, Lit Circle groups will work together to write Book Reviews to post on this class blog so other students will read the reviews and want to read these wonderful historical fiction books!
