Biography Lit Circles

April 2, 2009 · No Comments

Students have finished reading the fascinating biographies that they chose for Literature Circles over the past two weeks. The biographies are part of a wonderful series titled “In Their Own Words” that includes journals, letters, newspaper articles, photos, and other primary sources that tell the stories of famous Americans.

Students are learning about Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Betsy Ross, Orville and Wilbur Wright, or Davy Crockett. Their reading helps students to combine social studies topics and themes with reading, writing, and language.

Students read two or three chapters each day, then completed written responses to match – either before, during, or after reading. The written responses help students practice important reading comprehension skills and mirror the expectations of Homework Reading Logs. Students used their response sheets as they discussed the chapters read each day with their Lit Circle groups. Thoughtful responses made for thoughtful discussions!

Ask your fourth grader to share a few interesting tidbits from the biography he or she read during the month of March.

Literature Circle participants will also be sharing their knowledge of these well-known Americans through individual book reviews to be written and posted on the class blog in a week or two.

Check out an exciting biography or two at the Richards Library or a public library near you!

Time for Kids also features the biographies of famous – and not so very famous – Americans. Keep an eye out for these articles in the upcoming issues of TFK.

Bio4Kids – a special biography site just for kids from the Biography Channel :-)
