Wade House

April 29th, 2009 · No Comments

Fourth graders will be going on an exciting social studies field trip to Wade House on Monday, May 11. Wade House is a stagecoach inn built in the 1860s located in Greenbush, WI.

This historical site also includes a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a carriage museum. Students will learn about life at Wade House in the mid 19th century from the viewpoint of visitors, as well as those who lived there.

This is a full day field trip for academic purposes, which is different than a family trip, and students will have related activities to complete on the bus, at Wade House, and back at school.

For the follow-up language arts project, students will take on the character of a person who visited, lived in, or worked at Wade House in the 1860s and describe what life was like in those days.
A note with more information about the field trip is included in today’s Friday folder.

Homework Reminder

April 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

Homework reading logs should include a variety of grade level appropriate written responses. Students’ responses should demonstrate their comprehension of “just right” books. I am sending home a sample of the rubric that is used to assess these types of written responses in today’s Friday folder.

Please continue to check assignment notebooks daily to support homework assignments. In addition, check Friday folders each weekend to review the week’s corrected and graded schoolwork.

If an assignment is marked with Correct and Return, Incomplete, or a similar comment, students are expected to complete the work and bring the assignment back to school on the following Monday.

Please remember to call the Clinic as early as possible to report your child’s absence. Homework needs to be requested before 9:30. If homework is requested, please pick it up in the Office between 3:05 and 4:00.

Homework Reminders

February 20th, 2009 · No Comments

Fourth grade homework includes reading for at least 20 minutes daily and completing a thoughtful reading log entry four days a week. Reading logs should include a variety of quality responses that demonstrate the reading strategies fourth graders are learning and practicing in class.

Students should also be studying spelling words for 5-10 minutes in order to learn the spelling pattern or rule, as well as the week’s word list.

Math homework reviews the day’s lesson and should take from 5-15 minutes depending on the assignment.

Students are alerted at least one week ahead for science or social studies tests, and should review for a short time each day leading up to the test date.

Fourth graders are responsible for completing all homework written in assignment notebooks throughout the day. Homework assignments notebooks are reviewed at 8:10 and 3:00 with the teacher and with partners.

Please ask to see the assignment notebook as you talk to your fourth grader about what he or she did in school that day and what short term or long term homework has been assigned.

Assessment

October 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Fourth grade students are evaluated on daily class work, curriculum projects and assignments, and quizzes and tests through the use of numerical scores and rubrics. The expectations for work that will be assessed and graded is always clearly explained to students.

All student work that is assessed and graded is sent home in Friday folders for families to view and discuss.  If a paper is marked “Correct and Return,” that paper should be corrected at home and is due back to school on Monday.

Absent Make-Up Work

October 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

According to school policy, when students go on vacation on scheduled school days, they will need to complete their school work when they return to school. Some work must be done in school, while other work that was missed will be sent home. The work that is sent home will have a due date when it needs to be completed and handed in, usually within 2-3 days. Due to the hands-on, collaborative work that is done in class, it may not be possible to make up all activities, projects, and activites that are missed.
