How do you know if a book is just right for you? Just follow these tips from 4K!

Too Easy

Know all the words
Know what will happen
There are no surprises
Can’t make predictions
Large size font
Lots of illustrations
Understand everything
Too short
Too few words
Too predictable
Can tell by title, topic, and blurb
Doesn’t keep your interest
Not fun to read

Too Challenging

Too thick for now
Too many words on a page
Lots of words you don’t understand
Don’t understand the story
Not enough schema about the subject
Confusing plot or story
Too many characters
Hard to make predications
Takes too long to read
Really small font
Topic too sophisticated
Don’t really like it
Not fun to read

Just Right!

Don’t want to stop reading
Get most of the story and plot
Can make predications
Can do “I wonders”
Interesting subject or topic
Interesting characters
Like the genre of the book
Want to recommend to friends
Want to read more in the series
Can read at medium speed
Can read fluently
Keeps your interest
Time flies when you’re reading!

Fourth graders have done a terrific job this week organizing desks and school supplies, greeting old friends and meeting new friends, learning schedules and routines, and working hard during the first few days of school.

After listening to the read-aloud book “The First Day Jitters,” fourth graders shared times when they felt nervous – or had the “jitters” – when faced with a new situation or challenge. Students wrote personal narratives describing a memorable time when they felt nervous or scared or anxious.

Be sure to ask your fourth which character had the jitters in this entertaining picture book. J
