Reading Fluency
February 20th, 2009 · No Comments
Reading fluency is an important component of reading for students in the middle elementary grades. One definition of fluency is the ability to read aloud expressively and with understanding.
4K works on several types of activities throughout the year to practice and improve the skills of reading fluently.
Students read frequently each day. They read – and reread – story problems in math class. Students read and discuss TFK articles together with a partner. They read different texts in social studies and science classes.
Fourth graders will be working on readers’ theater scripts in the future. Readers’ theater has scripts with different parts to read aloud, similar to plays, but using voices only to dramatize the story.
In addition, fourth graders practice reading fluency when they visit their 4K book buddies to read aloud to them.
Another way for students to learn about reading fluency is hearing readers model what fluent reading sounds like.
In school they listen to teacher read-alouds, anthology stories on CD, and social studies lessons on CD.
At home, consider taking turns reading the pages of a book or magazine together with your fourth graders. Books on CD can also be a great way to hear fluent reading.
